Friday Top 10: Albums of the 90s

So, many of us here at Dose of Metal are in our mid twenties, and we grew up with Metal in the ’90s. It may not go down as the greatest decade in Metal history, but fuck it, I love the ’90s. So many damn good albums came out of that decade, and that’s the purpose of this week’s Friday Top 10.

The list is pretty simple. Two rules: Only one album per band, to keep it varied, and secondly, Metal only, and that’s it. Other than that, I just blew this list out of my ass, because I’m awesome and you should listen to me.

So what are you waiting for? Make the jump for this week’s Friday Top 10.

Machine Head unleash Locust

Ok, so it’s June the 10th, not the 14th, so aren’t you the lucky fuckers, because you can hear Machine Head‘s brand new song ‘Locust’ right now. That’s right, just press play above and you can listen to the song in all its 7 minute 39 second goodness.

The track itself is fairly good, however the sound quality isn’t the best. I also believe this isn’t a final mix (or I could be wrong). I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disappointed, but I’m also a huge Machine Head fan and my expectations may be a little high. Overall the song is good, and it really began to grow on me by the time I reached 3 or 4 minutes into the song. But what am I babbling about, just press play and make up your own damn mind.

First snippet of new Machine Head album

In the video above, you can hear 30 seconds of Machine Head’s upcoming single ‘Locust.’ The single will be released on June 14 (that’s just in 6 fucking days!) and Machine Head’s upcoming album, the follow-up to The Blackening, also has a release date: September 27.

So let’s give the sample a listen. It sounds… different, especially the vocals sound way different to what we’re used to by Mr. Flynn. I’m not sure if I like the poppy chorus vocals (not sure if it’s actually the chorus, heh) but it’s way too early to judge it just yet.

It does already convince me that this is no Blackening 2 and I’m glad the Head are trying to spice things up there.

This is going to be a long week because I can’t wait to listen to the entire song.

Back when they were still good

Just kidding 😛

This is back in the days when Robb Flynn had a bit of a semi for Fred Durst (if you’re reading this Robb, please don’t kill me), but luckily the band are back to their ass kicking selves. The new, as yet untitled, album is scheduled for release in September 2011. If it’s anywhere near as good as 2007’s The Blackening, we’re in for another real treat.

New Machine Head album still in the works

What you see above, is the second video of Machine Head preparing to record the follow-up to the masterpiece that is The Blackening. “Preparing to record…”? Well, let’s call it “The Making of the New Album (Part 2)”, because that’s what Machine Head called this video.

As for rehashing old material, I still really hope that they’re not going to record The Blackening 2 and move forward. I don’t really know what I want from the band, nor what to expect, though. I just want them to kick ass, as they usually do, except for that period I’d like to forget.

As for the video, I really liked the slow motion part of Dave McClain playing the drums, especially with ‘Descend The Shades Of Night’ playing in the background. That’s one of the most epic songs the Head ever wrote.

Still, we don’t get to hear any new music and I’d like them to keep it that way until the album, whatever it may be called, is released. I just like to hear the finished product first and then maybe get a real “Making of” that includes sound with the album. We’ll just have to wait and see (and hear) what comes with the next video.
