Blast From The Past: Esoteric – The Maniacal Vale

You know, like a lot of men, I enjoy it fast and hard, but sometimes, just sometimes, I prefer it slow and deep, prolonged over an intense period of time. I’m talking, of course, about Metal (why, what did you think I was talking about?). What Esoteric manage to produce, is atmospheric extreme Doom Metal that just fits the bill perfectly. They were featured in the Weekly Dose of Metal recently, so I think it’s about time they were given the review treatment.

Make the jump to read the review of Esoteric’s latest album, The Maniacal Vale, released back in 2008.

Metallica have 700 new riffs

Lars Ulrich revealed in a recent Metal Hammer interview that Metallica have over 700 new riffs to choose from for their new album.

James told me in Australia that he had over 700 riffs. That was slightly overwhelming. When I spoke to him yesterday, he told me that he’d been playing guitar again in the last couple of weeks. And listen, when James tunes his guitar, he comes up with three to five usable guitar riffs. It’s kind of frightening. James is not allowed to play guitar without being recorded. Literally!

I’m not gonna lie, I actually believe that. I don’t think anyone (who knows anything about guitar playing) can disagree with the fact that James is a brilliant guitar player, especially in terms of writing. The question is, what inspires him these days? Is it actual metal, or softer stuff? I think Lars has an answer for that as well…

The side of Metallica that we are having a lot of fun with right now is the harder, faster, more manic, more out-of-control stuff than, say, the ‘Load’‘Reload’ British blues stuff. Playing a lot of the full-on metal stuff like ‘Dyers Eve’ and ‘The Shortest Straw’. We played ‘The Call Of Ktulu’ in Australia. Bringing out ‘Trapped Under Ice’ again… It’s just been cool to feel comfortable about embracing that side of Metallica.

That’s not just ‘a side’ of Metallica though. That IS Metallica, at least as far as most people are concerned. It’s the Load/Reload era that was ‘another side’ of the band. I don’t know too many people who fell in love with this band because of songs like ‘Prince Charming.’

But I’m sure everyone is happy to hear that they’re sticking to the harder stuff still.

Video of the Week: Bloodbath

The video above is for Bloodbath’s ‘Hades Rising’ off their latest album ‘The Fathomless Mastery.’ I remember when the video for the song was first announced and I was impatiently waiting, lurking for hours on the official Bloodbath forum and stuff like that. When the video was finally released on Youtube, I was kind of disappointed with the video itself but the song remains one of my favorite Bloodbath tunes, especially the mindblowing outro.

Bloodbath have, over the years, achived quite a lot. The band was just formed in 1998, as a so-called supergroup, and then became one of the most respected and popular Death Metal acts, among oldschool Death Metal fans, just like younger Death Metal fans. In a time, where every second band is called a supergroup, it’s refreshing to listen to a real supergroup that plays awesome music.

Slipknot will continue ‘with or without Corey’

I have absolutely no idea whether this is new news, old news, footage from the future, or if I’m just drunk, but I’ve stumbled across an interview with Joey Jordison in regards to Slipknot‘s future, and he sounds either in a rush, or a little bit pissed…

Joey claims that the band is ready to continue as a band, both touring and with new music, with or without frontman Corey Taylor. Hopefully without… Maybe then we can get more music like this, and less like this.
