Review: The Haunted – Unseen

A while back I was moaning that I couldn’t find The Haunted’s latest album Unseen in my local CD store. Well, a few weeks have gone by and I finally spotted it in another shop and thought why not pick it up? So that’s exactly what I did. After letting the album sink in a bit, it’s time to pen my review of the album.

Since the release of 2006’s The Dead Eye, the band have been facing continuous criticism from both fans and critics alike, and 5 years later, 2011’s Unseen is no different. This is the band sticking up their middle fingers to those that criticize, and actually delving deeper down the less thrashy, and more “experimental” and melodic path they began with The Dead Eye. It was obvious that this would be the case, as frontman Peter Dolving has repeatedly stated that he doesn’t give a fuck what people think, and that The Haunted would continue down this route regardless. In a sense, it’s almost quite commendable of the band, although it leaves Dose of Metal in a tricky spot. I mean, as a site we dislike anything that isn’t Metal, and The Haunted are barely Metal anymore. Yet we also love to stick our middle fingers to the critics and stick to our guns, and I can’t help but praise The Haunted for the same.

That’s enough rambling for now though; make the jump instead to read the review.

Video of this Week: Týr

Týr own. Their album from 2009, ‘By The Light Of The Northern Star,’ is my personal favorite album of 2009. This is Folk Metal, the way I love it.

Týr are actually the most popular and successful band ever in their homecountry, the Faroe Islands. Now, that’s pretty impressive, right? Especially for a metal band. But you have to take into consideration that the Faroe Islands only have a population of about 50,000. My hometown has a bigger population. Hell, even Aruba has a bigger population.

But all that doesn’t really matter and take away anything of their success. They deserve it too, because they’re awesome. So is the music video for ‘Hold The Heathen Hammer High.’ I mean, these guys are vikings, sailing and preparing for a great battle and once they arrive on the shore, they fight… a wooden cross. What the hell? Well, at least it’s a great song.

Video of last Week: Six Feet Under

Somehow, I forgot to post a Video of the Week last week and I just noticed now. So it’s only fair to post two videos in a row, right? Right. So last week’s Video of the Week is Six Feet Under’s ‘The Day The Dead Walked.’

Why? Because it owns, fuck you. And ever since I watched SFU rip earlier this month, I’ve been hooked again. I remember playing this video non-stop when I first got introduced to Six Feet a couple of years ago. It’s still cheesy as fuck but I love it.

Bands I’ve somehow missed out on

Sometimes I’m so busy listening to the 5 bands I like (Pantera, Pantera, Pantera, Pantera, Machine Head), that I just miss out on new bands, so I decided to go out of my way and just listen to some random bands I’ve never heard of before.

I’ve listened to four bands that I’ve never heard of before and one band stood out, ‘The Absence.’ I’ve listened to their album ‘Riders Of The Plague’ and holy shit, it’s awesome. Do yourself a favor and listen to the song below.

What else did I miss out on? If you know a band, that hasn’t been covered on a lot of metal blogs etc., and they kick serious ass, tell me about them! I’m just a fan and I love to hear about new bands.

Trivial teaser

Remember back in the day when Trivium were a bunch of teenagers and were praised because of their skills? Aaah. I bet they wish they could go back in time, because back then at least they had that. Well, I never bought any of it in the first place, but for all of you who are still interested in them (raise your hands while I use my fingers to count you all), they’ve posted a teaser for their upcoming album.

Black and white? Check. Automatically pretentious because of the first thing I mentioned? Check. Working (?) titles for songs, including “Black” and “Grey?” Inception style check. A song called “Inception” amongst those titles? Check within a check. Metal? Oooops.
