Video of the Week: Anthrax

‘Only’ is probably the most popular song of John Bush era Anthrax. Metallica’s James Hetfield called ‘Only’ the perfect song and I can’t say I disagree.

‘Only’ was the lead single of Anthrax’s 6th studio album Sound Of White Noise, the first album with John Bush as their vocalist after Joey Belladonna was fired in 1992.

The song is a crowd favorite up to this very day, with Joey Belladonna performing the song for the first time with the band in 2010 as part of the Big Four “tour.”

Scott got a little Ian

We’re a bit late on this, because Scott Ian’s music just interests us a bit more than his private life, but we at Dose of Metal want to take this moment to congratulate Scott Ian and his wife Pearl Aday because on June 19, at 10:19 am, the couple welcomed their first child, Revel Young Ian.

In a couple of tweets, Ian posted:

“Happiest day of my life.”

“Thank you all for the kind words. Life was good and it just got a whole lot better. Cheers.”

Now, just imagine growing up with your daddy being Scott Ian and your grandpa being Meat Loaf, Pearl’s father. If this kid doesn’t grow up to be a kickass musician, I’m disappointed.

Blast from the Past: Iron Maiden – Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

Seven deadly sins, seven ways to win, seven holy paths to hell, and your trip begins. Seven downward slopes, seven bloodied hopes, seven are your burning fires, seven your desires… These are the words that open Iron Maiden‘s seventh album, the aptly titled Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. And what a way to open it is.

Released in 1988, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is the second Iron Maiden album to feature keyboards, it is the last to include guitarist Adrian Smith until Brave New World in 2000, and it is the band’s attempt at somewhat of a concept, almost Prog like, album.

We’ve been running this site for nearly a year now and we have yet to review a single Iron Maiden album, we just had a brilliant Friday Top 10 on the Maiden, so it’s about time we reviewed an album right? Make the jump to see what I make of the 1988 classic (bollocks I just gave away my verdict).

Friday Top 10: Best Iron Maiden songs

Iron Maiden are, without question, the greatest metal band of all time.  Yes,  I said it.  If you don’t share my opinion, you fail as a metal fan and I hate you then it’s perfectly fine.   The originators of the genre, Black Sabbath, surely would have something to say about this title.  You can also throw in Judas Priest and Metallica into the mix, as well.

I’ll be honest and admit composing a top 10 Iron Maiden list was quite a challenge.  But after countless nights of no sleep and ridiculous pressure and physical abuse from the Dose of Metal crew (to deliver the absolute best 10 Iron Maiden tracks), I actually succeeding coming up with a legit list.

So, what are you waiting for?  Make the jump to view the 10 greatest Iron Maiden songs!

Zakk Wylde talks about Randy Rhoads

According to Zakk Wylde and his interviewer, Randy Rhoads ‘flourished’ only after he joined Ozzy.

In a recent interview, this is what the former Ozzy guitarist had to say about, well, the former Ozzy guitarist before him:

Nothin’ for nothin’, the best thing for Randy was hookin’ up with Ozzy. […] Neal Zlozower [famous rock photographer] had seen him and he goes, ‘I know you love Randy and he’s your guy but I saw him back in the day with Quiet Riot and it was just like, ehhh.’

Read full interview here.

Quoting photographers and using that as an argument about a guitarist’s value. Cool. Were there any cameramen there, too? I’m sure they have a lot of input on Randy’s pre-Ozzy sound.

Listen, Zakk Wylde is a great guitarist and I respect his opinion on other guitar players, but who the hell cares what that Neal guy thinks of any guitarist? I’d like to see him take some criticism on photography from Kirk Hammett and Angus Young. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right?

Wait, that’s a saying about equal rights amongst sexes, isn’t it? Why do I try to sound smarter than I really am? 🙁
