Thrash ’til Death – Big Four times four, part 4

Welcome to the fourth and last edition of Thrash ’til Death, four lists of four of my favorite Thrash Metal bands, each list led by a genuine Big Four band. Lots of “fours” in there, eh?

We started with Metallica, then it was Slayer’s turn and after that, Megadeth had the lead so now it’s time for Anthrax. Make the jump for this last piece of a four (oh another “four”) week Thrash special.

Interview: Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down, Kingdom of Sorrow)

Kirk Weindstein (Crowbar, Down, Kingdom of Sorrow)

Kirk Windstein is a man of many talents, but not a man of many words. He plays in three awesome bands, and he got to be interviewed by an awesome site. In case you didn’t figure it out by the post title and the previous sentence, he was interviewed by us. And in case you didn’t figure it out by everything and anything written by us, we’re awesome.

Yours truly got a chance to do a quick chat with him, so make the jump and read it. How quick was it? Well, you’ll realize what I meant by “not a man of many words” shortly after you start reading it. Which won’t take much, because the entire interview could fit a tweet and a half. Maybe Kirk’s become eco conscious, and he’s saving bytes? What do I know… Just make the jump already.

Scott Columbus passed away

Sad news has surfaced in the metal world, unfortunately.   Ex-Manowar drummer Scott Columbus died this past Monday at the age of 54.

With the exception of  ‘Battle Hymns,Scott Columbus drummed on every single Manowar album in the 80s.  Scott left the band in 1990 but rejoined six years later to record the next three Manowar albums.  He left in 2008 due to creative differences with bassist Joey DeMaio.

Manowar also just released a statement on their official website:

“With great sorrow we announce the passing of our brother Scott. A rare talent, equally a rare individual, a father, friend and a brother of metal  All the great moments we spent together are burnished in our hearts and memories forever. We know he is in a good place and at peace. He will never be forgotten.”

Scott was a talented drummer, no question about it. He will be missed in the metal world.  We at Dose Of Metal give our condolences.

Metal goes acoustic: Go Fourth

Acoustic Metal fans are in for a real treat today. Today’s cover is the Thrash classic, Break Stuff, originally by Limp Bizkit. Whilst the original was great in its own right, it wasn’t without its flaws. With this cover, done by two guys, those flaws seem to be have completely eradicated. The lyrical genius of Fred Durst is highlighted with the vocals becoming much more prominent in this acoustic mix. In addition, while it may be difficult to believe, but the vocalist manages to be an even better rapper than Freddy D.

Overall, the cover does manage to surpass the quality of the original track, but I do feel it is missing some random beer swilling during the chorus’ and perhaps even some real breaking of “stuff” in the background to accompany the wonderful track. Perhaps I’m just nitpicking though.

Some headlines…

Chimaira (pictured above) lost their keyboardist. His name is Chris Spicuzza and I have no idea if he’s actually in the photo above or not. It says he’s also a programmer… I didn’t know metal bands needed coders.

August Burns Red (who?) set a title for their upcoming album. It’s called Leveler and it’s due on June 21st. Now, I don’t know about you, but if I were in that band, I’d release all my shit in August.

Trivium are also working on a new album. In fact, they’re almost finishing it. This is about as exciting as finding our you need an anus operation.

In Flames are also releasing something. For fuck’s sake, everyone’s releasing everything right now. Anyway, these guys are releasing a digital single on May 10th and if you’re anxious about it, blow me.

Alice In Chains will make a special concert announcement next week. It’s still ‘this week’ where I live so no point discussing this yet.
