Tuesday Trivia: The longest Metal songs ever

So it’s that time again, it’s the weekly feature, Tuesday Trivia, which, erm, we haven’t actually done in a couple of weeks now. Apologies about that, but we are all regular guys, with day jobs, and we’ve all been super busy recently (did I just say super busy? Ugh never mind). But what do you care? I know, I need to stop babbling.

So what’s this week’s Tuesday Trivia on? Well, Metal as a general rule, is an ambitious genre and bands are always trying to out do eachother. Metal also doesn’t confine itself to “rules” and if they want to write a song that’s longer than the average length (which is 3:30 for those interested), then they’ll damn well do it. So, with that in mind, this week’s Trivia is about the longest Metal tracks.

Make the jump for the longest article ever (just kidding, it’s not that long).

They say size doesn’t matter, but believe me, it does. It doesn’t do a whole lot for a man’s self confidence when a women undresses you and laughs. Of course, I’m not talking from experience here. My point is though, I love long songs. Maybe it’s myself trying to appear cool, maybe I’m covering some genitalia insecurities,  or maybe, it’s just that long ass Metal songs kick ass.

So how long is a piece of string? How long is my penis? (10 inches) And how long, is too long? What’s the longest Metal song?

Well, according to rateyourmusic.com, who’s users have contributed to a list of the longest Metal songs, the longest Metal track in existence is a song called ‘The Hunt’ by Metal act Fauna, clocking in at a whopping 79 minutes and 57 seconds in length. Normally at this point I would embed the track below, but can you name a streaming site that hosts 79 minute tracks? Nope, didn’t think so.

Funnily enough though, you can stream Green Carnation‘s 60 minute classic, ‘Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness’ below, which is apparently the 16th longest Metal song. It also happens to be one of my favorite albums (well song) of the 21st century. I’d personally advise you buy the CD, or download it, though, because no one wants to sit staring at a youtube screen for an hour 😛

Another brilliant Metal track, that manages to surpass the length of my penis, is Edge of Sanity‘s ‘Crimson II’. Readers of our Weekly Dose of Metal articles, will know that I love this band. ‘Crimson II’ makes the list at number 26, and is 43 minutes in length. You can listen to it on youtube, but it’s been split into 7 parts. Part 1 is below.

There are many other notably long songs too, that make the list. Esoteric have a number of tracks that make the list. One example is number 47 with their phenomenal track ‘Ignotum Per Ignotius’, which comes from the album The Maniacal Vale that I reviewed not long ago. Dream Theater as you’d expect are all over the list. ‘Six Degrees of Turbulence’ is number 27, ‘Octavarium’ is 46, and ‘Systematic Chaos’ is 68. Meshuggah also have a few mentions.

You can read more of the list, by clicking the link here. Know of any more long Metal tracks, have I, or rate your music missed anything? Comments are welcomed.
