Weekly Dose of Metal: Cathedral

Cathedral are a psychedelic Doom Metal band from England, that began by playing very slow and heavy forms of the music, but later went on to create more groove inspired, upbeat and experimental music. Their debut album Forest of Equilibrium was released in 1991 and is considered a classic by fans of the Doom genre, but it is the latter, more experimental albums that have gained the most praise.

Third album The Carnival Bizarre was much closer to Stoner Rock in musical style, and gained rave review from critics and fans alike. You can listen to the song ‘Hopkins (The Witchfinder General)’ taken from that very album below. The song kicks ass!

Cathedral announce last ever show, for reals

Legendary British Doom Metallers, Cathedral have announced their last ever show will take place in the London Forum on Saturday December 3rd, and they’re totally serious too. Don’t expect any high profile reunion/comebacks down the road, if what founding member Lee Dorian has to say is true.

“Well we’ve been doing this for over twenty-one years now and I think it’s a bit of a cop out when bands get back together. I never-say-never, but I honestly can’t see it ever happening. The music means more to us than that and it’s not as though people haven’t had enough chances to see us over the years. I would say it’s very unlikely.”

Apparently the band actually announced their retirement way back in February and I just totally missed it. Woops. But every cloud has its silver lining, and on this occasion, the silver lining is I found some new porn that the band will release a final album in 2012.
