Friday Top 26: Heavy Metal Alphabet

We've done so many Top 10's already, but this time we've decided to top it all with a Top 26. 26? There was something with 26, right? You got it! The Latin alphabet, that is used in most countries on this planet, has 26 letters.

So what are we going to do with these 26 letters? Well, every band has a bandname, and every bandname consists of letters. Can you follow me so far? We're going to list the best band for each letter of the Latin alphabet (including their best song and album).

Ain't that cool, now? It sure is. Make the jump for 26 letters and 26 ear-shattering Metal bands!

Friday Top 10: Best Machine Head songs

First thing's first, let me tell you something: Compiling this list has been an absolute shitcunt. I'm pretty sure I may have just offended more than a few people with that language, but hey, if you're reading Dose of Metal you've probably come to expect poor language and poor writing. If you are offended, you may just want to remove that sand from your vagina before it starts to itch too much. That's a number one health tip from Doctor Mark (I'm not really a doctor though, I'm barely even a person, so please don't sue me).

But back to business, as I was saying, writing this week's Top 10 has been pretty damn hard. Apart from my inability to construct a concise sentence (number one tip BTW, don't begin a sentence with the word 'but') and put those things together that form words (letters maybe?), I've also struggled to keep this list to just 10 songs. Machine Head have a lot of kick ass, awesome tracks that really should have made the cut, but I simply couldn't include due to having to fit it into one Top 10 list.

So anyways, make the jump, read the Top 10 and then go bitch about what an idiot I am for failing to mention [insert song] from [insert album] that "sooooo should have made the list!"

Friday Top 10 : Best Soundgarden songs

If you were born anywhere in between 1975 and 1985, chances are you grew up in the 90s listening to Soundgarden.

Soundgarden formed in the 1980s and started gaining success with their third studio album, Badmotorfinger, an album where many (myself included) think it was them as their peak. It was the perfect mix of rock, grunge and metal -- all packed into one and Chris Cornell at the time was possibly one of the best vocalists around. However, it wasn't until 1994 that they became a household name. You coudn't turn on a modern rock station without hearing 'Spoonman' or 'Black Hole Sun.'

1997 was the year in which Soundgarden broke up. I was young and unfortunately never thought I'd get the chance to see them. I never imagined, in my wildest dreams, that they would return, but obviously in 2010 they announced that they were back. I felt like an excited 14 year old all over again and I was fortune enough to see them live a couple of weeks ago.

I recently just finished composing a Soundgarden top 10 list. Oh yeah, feel free to tell me that I missed out on certain tracks or that certain songs should be higher or lower. It might not of been as hard as an Iron Maiden top 10, but it was still quite a challenge.

Make the jump for the top 10 Soundgarden songs ever!

Friday Top 10: Notorious acts

It's a late Friday evening, which means whilst everyone else is out either getting laid or getting drunk, I'm once again stuck inside, writing for Dose of Metal and publishing this week's Friday Top 10.

Metal as a genre is undoubtedly one that is full of controversies, stories of self-mutilation, murder, drugs and religious intolerance. Sure, these are often unjustified criticisms directed at the genre by conservative morons, and I am by no means trying to play into these idiots' hands, but the purpose of this Top 10 is going to revel in some of the "edgier" sides of Metal.

So if you're interested in reading about some of the more controversial, notorious and outrageous Rock and Metal acts, then just make the motherfucking jump.

Friday Top 10: Greatest Metallica solos

Last week, for the first time ever, we missed the chance to write a Top 10 because we were lazy busy. Instead of publishing a 'Friday Top 10' on a Saturday, we've decided to simply work on a bigger Top 10 for 'next Friday' -- which is this Friday cause this happened last week. Confused? So am I.

Anyway, this is more than just a Top 10. I will also talk about 5 runner-ups and will make it a Top 15.

Now, let's get back to business. I talk a lot about how James is THE guitarist of Metallica, and people give Kirk a lot of shit for his playing. But truth to be told, Kirk wrote some of the best metal solos of all time. His 80s lead work is legendary and has probably influenced countless lead guitarists.

You can get the most technically proficient lead guitarist in Metallica, it won't guarantee better songs. Kirk's soloing just gels with James' riffs, in my opinion, and this Top 10 will take a look at some of his best work.

Arranging the solos by 'quality' is very hard. You tend to 'root' for your favorite songs. So I tried to be as objective as I could and simply judge the solo itself, regardless of how much I like the rest of the song.

Disclaimer: This article will not talk about speed, length or other technical aspects. It is simply about what I think are Metallica's greatest solos, judged on how good they sound on their own and how well they fit the song itself. So all you guitar dorks out there, watch out.

Now that we got out of the way, we can carry on with the top itself. Make the jump.

Friday Top 10: Best Iron Maiden songs

Iron Maiden are, without question, the greatest metal band of all time.  Yes,  I said it.  If you don't share my opinion, you fail as a metal fan and I hate you then it's perfectly fine.   The originators of the genre, Black Sabbath, surely would have something to say about this title.  You can also throw in Judas Priest and Metallica into the mix, as well.

I'll be honest and admit composing a top 10 Iron Maiden list was quite a challenge.  But after countless nights of no sleep and ridiculous pressure and physical abuse from the Dose of Metal crew (to deliver the absolute best 10 Iron Maiden tracks), I actually succeeding coming up with a legit list.

So, what are you waiting for?  Make the jump to view the 10 greatest Iron Maiden songs!

Friday Top 10: Best Death Metal songs

People always ask me "Hey, you awesome metal journalist you, what are the best songs of <insert genre>," so I figured I'd write a list about the greatest Death Metal songs of all time.

There are just a couple of rules I'm limiting myself to. #1 Only one song per band, #2 Must be Death Metal; not Melodic Death, Deathgrind or Blackened Death.

Sounds simple? Well, it is, isn't it? So make the jump now for this week's Friday Top 10.

Friday Top 10: Albums of the 90s

So, many of us here at Dose of Metal are in our mid twenties, and we grew up with Metal in the '90s. It may not go down as the greatest decade in Metal history, but fuck it, I love the '90s. So many damn good albums came out of that decade, and that's the purpose of this week's Friday Top 10.

The list is pretty simple. Two rules: Only one album per band, to keep it varied, and secondly, Metal only, and that's it. Other than that, I just blew this list out of my ass, because I'm awesome and you should listen to me.

So what are you waiting for? Make the jump for this week's Friday Top 10.

Friday Top 10: Most Influential Metal Bands

Remember when I posted my wacky comments on Kerrang! magazine's Top 10 of the most influential rock bands of the last 30 years? Well, it's time to post the metal equivalent of that Top 10, only we're not limiting ourselves to time, so it's the most influential bands of metal history.

Also, only metal bands can make the list. Not bands that aren't metal themselves but influenced a wide array of metal bands, so exclude AC/DC, Deep Purple etc.

Now, make the jump to see if my list is better than Kerrang's list.

It is.

Friday Top 10: Best AC/DC songs

AC/DC... One of the biggest bands on Earth and probably one of the best. Their simple riffs and simple drum beats magically worked together to create some of the most amazing songs in existence. There is really nothing else to say about them except that they're legends, they're brilliant, and they are better than your favorite band.

When it comes to selecting their top ten songs, it's not easy. Surely everyone will love the entries in this top, but when it comes to the order, I'm sure there are many different opinions.

So make the jump if you want to read my take on what their best songs are. You have the right to disagree, of course, but that won't make you right. By making the jump you accept my amazing opinion as being pure fact.

Friday Top 10: Metal holidays

It's that time of the week again, folks. The Friday Top 10. And this time it's educational as shit. I'm gonna go through 10 of the biggest holidays of the year and will tell you a thing or two about how they relate to metal.

So buckle up and get ready to have your face rocked by an epic guide to celebrating holidays... The right way...

Disclaimer: If you're a Catholic priest who's easily offended by God jokes, please avoid the article... Oh and also stop touching kids.

However, if you like Jesus jokes coupled with homoerotic innuendos, make the jump...

Friday Top 10: Love songs

People often prejudge Metal as being an "angry" and "monotonous" genre, which is only concerned with noise and aggression. However, I'm going to prove that this isn't always the case, as the Metal genre also happens to be home to some of the most emotionally mature and beautiful love songs and ballads.

Want to check out a more emotional side to Metal, then get your dose of love after the jump!

Friday Top 10: Shitty sellout songs

This week’s Friday Top 10 is all about those ridiculous ‘sell out’ songs. You know the ones; you have a band that YOU love, it’s YOUR band, and then all of a sudden, they release some bullshit single and every fucker suddenly likes them. Or sometimes bands just like to “broaden their horizons” and “explore new territories” – Read dumb their shit down for the masses or follow the current trend.

Now, I’m not looking to get into a debate about the definition of “sell out” or discuss the pros and cons of bands taking different paths, this is just a bit of fun. So make the jump, and have a laugh at some of these ridiculous songs. Or don’t, I still don’t get paid at the end of the week regardless.

Friday Top 10: Best album covers

It's Friday and therefore it's time for another Top 10 list. We've done worst album covers in November and most brutal album covers last week, but somehow we've never done best album covers. So, I guess it's about fucking time.

Before we dive right into it, I want to let you know that, despite labeling it one of my favorite album artworks, I won't include Slayer's 'Christ Illusion' for the simple reason that I want a fresh Top 10.

Feel free to make the jump now... or die trying!
