Last week we covered concert riots, and at one point I mentioned I might make a follow up. Here we are, it’s Friday Next, and let’s see if the sequel is any good.
Make the jump for ten funny, weird or simply fucked up stage incidents.
A word on the list: Categorizing every stage incident would take forever. I simply chose 10 on some weird subjective criteria. But don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll run out of ideas on Top 10s eventually and then we’ll look back at what else we could squeeze from older ones. So, this sequel might turn into a spin-off.
And now, for the list…
#10: Trap Them frontman kicks a heckler
Pretty much what is says. We reported this earlier in the year. In short — Trap Them are performing, a guy in the audience is being a dick and pushing other people around, Trap Them frontman Ryan McKenney notices it, does a kung fu punch on him and a minute later, screams into the guy’s face. Pretty badass.
#9: Kirk Hammet hits a little girl in the face
Even though the title makes it sound like some home abuse case, it’s not, this is actually about a little girl. Okay, let’s start again. Even though the title makes it sound like Kirk’s strong enough to hit a little girl, he’s not. He just kicked a ball and it hit a little girl in the face, knocking her over. We’ve already made plenty of fun regarding this clip, but it won’t hurt anyone to do it again. Except maybe the little girl and her feelings.
#8: Bret Michaels almost loses his head at Tony’s Awards
I’m not thinking “lost his head” as a figure of speach, the guy almost lost his head in a quite literal way. Neil Patrick Harris comes in to poke fun at it, and well, it’s Neil Patrick Harris. Less gay than Bret Michaels, but way funnier.
#7: Within Temptation singer almost gets caught on fire
Material for one of those Faces of Death or whatever they’re called — Within Temptation singer Sharon den Adel gets very close to the edge of the stage, her band-mate Robert Westerholt rushes in and pulls her to the back, and about a second later, flames rise. The clip both Within Temptation haters and fans watch in tears.
#6: Juggalos versus Andrew W.K.
To be clear, it could also be Juggalos vs. Everyone. Mother nature’s biggest incidents have an annual festival called Gathering of the Juggalos. which celebrates the culture of Juggalos. And by that, I mean a bunch of white trash people get together to get wasted and put clown make up on them.
Apparently, the “festival” features other bands along Insane Clown Posse every year, and from what I’ve seen, Juggalos aren’t usually very acceptive — they pretty much bottle the hell out of everyone. Last year they even attempted to murder Tila Tequila. You’d think they’d at least save a fellow crazy like Charlie Sheen, but they don’t. Up there you see Andrew W.K. making the best of the situation, and I gotta say, he is quite funny about the whole thing.
#5: Slash attacked on stage
Well, we can’t let Axl get all the glory on these lists now, can we. I guess all those years in Guns N’ Roses taught him something, and that would be “How to handle an asshole.” Some guy appears on stage and tries to tackle Slash. He stumbles, gets up, and guess what — continues playing instead of throwing the guitar and leaving the stage. Mind-boggling.
#4: Stage at Pukkelpop Festival colapses
I thought long (for about ten seconds) about including this one, because it is so fresh I didn’t want people to get the wrong message by putting it right next to Juggalos and Axl Roses’ hissy fits. In the end, I decided to go with it, ugly as it is, it will go down in history as one of the biggest stage accidents. Yesterday, a huge storm hit the festival crashing one of the stages, killing 5 people, injuring more than 70 and prompting the festival organizers to cancel the remaining festival days out of respect to the families of the unfortunately deceased.
#3: The weirdest thing to get thrown off stage, ever?
A lot can happen at a Mayhem show. And not many of those things are good. What can you expect from a band that likes to dismember animal corpses on stage? Oh yeah, that they throw some of it to the crowd. Which is exactly what happened at a show in Bergen, when they brought a sheep and tossed the skull onto the head of a fan named Per Kristian Hagen, leaving a fist-sized fracture in his skull.
#2: The weirdest thing to get thrown on stage, ever?
Unfortunately, there’s no video clips backing up this one, only a written testament by Josh Homme in an interview given to Rolling Stone. In it, when asked what was the weirdest thing thrown at him on stage, he claims that once, during a Queens Of The Stone Age show, someone threw a midget on stage, and he actually stopped playing because he couldn’t believe what happened.
#1: Dimebag Darrel gets shot on stage
One of the worst things possible to happen on stage, happened on December 8, 2004, when an armed former US Marine, Nathan Gale, delivered three shots to Dimebag’s head, killing him instantly, just at the beginning of a Damageplan show. Three other people were killed, including a fan who tried to perform CPR on Dimebag and his head of security. Early reports indicated that the reason for the shooting was the break up of Pantera and the following feud between Anselmo and Darrel, yet later it was revealed Gale was a paranoid schizophrenic who thought the band was reading his mind, stealing his thoughts and laughing at him.
May they rest in peace, and may this never happen again.
Bonus round: Guns N’ Roses Megapost
Last week Guns N’ Roses took three spots out of ten, and I joked I could have easily made a Top 10 on them. Think not? To the three featured last week, add the following:
- Axl threatens the crowd he’ll leave if another bottle makes it to the stage. Translator and all.
- Band temporarily leave the stage at Download 2006, Bumblefoot to the rescue
- Axl calls fans “stupid fuckheads”
- “He’s in my ass, that’s where Slash is… Fuckhead, go home!”
- Axl stops the show during Sweet Child O Mine, (verbally) fights a fan
- Guns N’ Roses walk off stage at a show in Newcastle in 2006
- Axl pushes a fan back into crowd
- and plenty more…
